Virginia Brown Thunder "Ta' Sagye Sapa Win" (Her Black Cane Woman), was born March 29, 1932 in a log cabin on the family homestead in Ash Creek, South Dakota to Raymond and May (One Skunk) Brown Thunder. Virginia was one of eleven children: Alva & Thelma (twins), Flora, Genevieve, Virginia, Melda, Elberta, Milo, Joshua, Patrick and Victor. She attended school in Red Scaffold, riding the bus. It was rumored that some of the kids, including a relative, teased her by calling her "Tokyo Rose". Virginia also attended school at St. Joseph's in Chamberlain and Marty's Indian School, Marty, SD.

After high school, Virginia went to work at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD, later moving to Rapid City where she met her future husband, Joe Dufek. She and Joe married in 1954 and moved to the west coast where they raised five boys, Clifton, Joe III, Ricky, William and Randy. Virginia was a good wife and mother, and was always interested in her boys school and sports activities. She also worked for some years as a housekeeper. After retiring, Joe and Virginia spent part of their time in Tyndall, SD, where they also had a home (Joe's hometown). After Joe passed away in 2008, Virginia moved back to Portland to live with her son and family, but due to failing health and needed skilled nursing care, she entered Marquis Care at Centennial in Portland, Oregon. Virginia lived there for a year and a half before passing into the spirit world on October 18, 2012. She was saved and is safe in God's hands, but will be missed very much by all who knew and loved her.
