Delbert Traversie

Funeral services for Delbert Traversie, 63, of Eagle Butte, will be Monday, Dec. 10th at 10:00AM, at the Eagle Butte High School Auditorium. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD at 3:00PM under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home, Mobridge, SD. Meet at the 4-mi Jct. Sunday at 3:00PM to process to St. John's Episcopal Church for wake services beginning at 7:00PM. Delbert entered the spirit world on December 1st in Eagle Butte.

Delbert Traversie was born June 11th 1949 at the Old Agency to Blaine and Edith Traversie. He was one of 13 siblings. Delbert lived his young life on "the flat" and around the White Horse area. He attended school at the Old Agency and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School until being drafted into the US Army April 3rd 1969.
Delbert served a two year term as an Infantryman in Vietnam, earning a National Defense service medal, a Vietnam service medal, Vietnam campaign medal, Combat infantry medal and an Army Commendation Medal. Delbert as a loyal soldier that was extremely proud to have served his country.
After returning from the service Delbert lived with his parents and many siblings enjoying time spent with his many nieces and nephews.

On June 11th 1977 Delbert married Anita Laundreaux and to this union two children were born Delnita Josette and Winston Tell. Delbert had many jobs, working for the Holloway Ranch, having Tribal jobs as well as working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Delbert had a huge love for sports. He loved bronc riding, telling TC Holloway and Casey Tibbs stories, the New York Yankees and whatever big game him and Winston were watching that day. Delbert was also a follower and a fan of the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Braves basketball teams, sometimes being too nervous to attend a game.

Delbert had two grandchildren Tatum Tai and Cade Calvin that he loved dearly. He was proud of Tatum's athletic determination and the fact that she looked like Delnita. Delbert was his grandson Cade's babysitter and partner for four years; they would memorize dinosaur names and have private adventures that kept secret to them only.

Delbert loved to watch the Western Channel and read Louis Lamour books. One of Delbert's many nicknames was "Rambo" and when he was called this he would beam with pride and a smile. He will be forever remembered for his kindness and respect. He was always very proud of where he came from.

Delbert is survived by his children: Delnita Traversie, Winston Traversie, and Tyson Laundreaux; Siblings: Beverly Longbrake, Pierre Traversie (Iva), Calvin (Audrey) Traversie, Elaine Ward, Andrew (Hazel) Traversie, Kenny (Susie) Traversie, Paulette Rowley, Betty (Roger) Dupris, Rita (Jerry) Farlee, Darshan (Geritol) Long, Melvin (Kelly) Traversie.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Blaine and Edith TRraversie, brother Tom Traversie and baby boy Jasper Traversie and several nieces and nephews.
