Bertha Mae Soft Ducheneaux was born May 5, 1933 near Mobridge, South Dakota to Matthew Soft and Elizabeth No Heart. She was delivered by widwife, and the story goes that she was born under the railroad bridge going into Mobridge.

Bertha enjoyed country life as a young girl, and loved to ride horses. Rumor has it that she and her sister, Alvira, were well-known trick riders with their dad. Bertha lost both of her parents by the time she was nine years old, and after that, lived with relatives until starting boarding school in Pierre.

Sometime later, Bertha met her husband, George Ducheneaux, at a train station and fell in love. They were married and had seven children, Rollie, Victor, Libby "Elizabeth", Susan "Susie", Brenda, Francis and Robin.

Bertha enjoyed attending pow wows with her husband and children. George was in a singing group called Lakeside Singers, and her son, Francis, was a champion fancy dancer. Bertha also liked to go rummaging, attend auctions and go shopping at thrift stores. If she spotted a rummage sale, she had to go see what they had.

After her sister-in-law passed away in the 1980's, she & George took in their 3 nephews and 1 niece as their own. They welcomed then into the family, and did the best they could by them. She was a mother and grandma to all the kids she knew.

She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were always on her mind and near her heart. When her kids threw birthday parties for their kids, she made it to every party and to every graduation.

Bertha was loved by everyone that knew her. She was always helping others, and even helped out the other elderly at the Manor, if she could. She liked to play solitaire and bingo, and loved visiting friends and relatives. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends forever. May she rest in peace.

Bertha is survived by her children, Roland Ducheneaux, Victor (Carol) Ducheneaux, Elizabeth Ella "Libby" Ducheneaux (Elliot), Susan ( Justin Jr.) LaPlante, Brenda G.
