Kenneth William Loves War was born July 13, 1946 in Little Eagle, SD to Vine Loves War and Isabel (Roach) Standing Crow. He spent his early years in Rapid City, SD, attending boarding school at St. Elizabeth's, Wakpala, SD and Holy Rosary Mission, Pine Ridge Agency. He came to Fort Yates to complete his elementary and high school training. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1965 and trained for nine months before being assigned to the 612th Air Delivery Unit in Fort Bragg, NC. He served with the 3rd Army Airborne Unit supporting the 82nd Airborne, the 18th Airborne and Special Forces outfits.

After his service, he lived in various places including San Jose, Oakland, & San Francisco, CA & Lumbee, NC. He returned to Standing Rock, completing his education at Sitting Bull College and USD in Vermillion.

In his younger days, he was a trained boxer and participated in the Golden Gloves Boxing Club. Kenny became involved in sports while attending Ft. Yates High School, and attributed them to helping him in his life. He played with the 1962 football team, the Heart River Conference Champions, with a perfect 5-0 record. In 1963, the team was "undefeated" with 8 wins and 2 ties. In 1964, his senior year, the team had another winning season. He loved being a "Warrior", and was proud of his accomplishments. The friends and teammates bond lasted a lifetime, and he enjoyed talking of the trials and victories of the Warrior team.

Kenny tried to help the younger people by encouraging them to keep striving and to not ever give up. In the latter part of his life, he suffered with COPD and needed oxygen, but still maintained a positive attitude and kept going forward. He was active with the Growler-Looking Back-Jamerson Post 239 in Little Eagle, SD, but had the deepest respect for all of the posts. He considered the veterans of Veteran's Industries in McLaughlin, SD, his teammates and loved them all!
